Ghana: Cedi is world’s second-best-performing currency in 2025.
Ghana’s currency Cedi is one of the top two performing currencies globally this year, with a 42% gain against the dollar this year, as reported by Bloomberg. Following the welcome of Cedi’s appreciation, Ghanaian officials have unveiled initiatives to trickle down the gain to consumers with two initiatives: –
- Ghana plans to raise the price it pays to cocoa farmers for their beans by 6.5% to 3,300 cedis per 64-kilogram bag for the harvest starting in August. The higher domestic price will enable farmers to invest in inputs and discourage smuggling to neighboring countries, and Ghana’s strong currency will mute the economic motivation to smuggle beans.
- Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations , Hon Samuel Nartey George (MP), has called on Multichoice Ghana to implement a 30% reduction in DSTV subscription prices to match the cedi’s appreciation and to pass on economic benefits to consumers. Multichoice Ghana has up to July 21 to respond to the government’s demand for a price adjustment.
